The Angel Series - By
Thomas Kirby
These paintings combine a contemporary approach
to space and substance with a figurative aesthetic. The Angels are
drawn from great works of the early Renaissance. They are subtly
charged, however, with new meaning in an abstract context.
Surfaces break and crack to reveal layers of
paint. The process of painting is ultimately a process of
consciousness. Memory and fugitive states of mind are
suggested. These paintings are speculations about the nature of our
awareness of time.
Even as the Angel figures echo down to us through
history, we exist at a time both unique yet already deeply connected to
the past. These works are powerful metaphors for our time expressed
in a symbolic and personal way by the artist.
